Dubrovnik

After an amazing three days in Korcula, Lorna and I took off on a four-hour bus-trip to Dubrovnik. Yes, a bus trip. Normally you can just catch a ferry from the island, but because we were a little out of season, we had to hop on a bus, which hopped on a ferry, and then drove us to Dubrovnik. Weird, yes, but… “Whatever it takes!” we told the lady behind the ticket counter. After experiencing Split, Lorna and I expected Dubrovnik to be amazing. It was pretty-good, but I wouldn’t call it amazing. It could have had something to do with the place we stayed at...

Korcula

Korcula was apparently founded in the 12th century B.C. and the ancient looking buildings and walls certainly suggest that to be the case. Korcula was a pleasant surprise. As far as Croatia is concerned, you must visit Split, but if you don’t have much time I would recommend putting Korcula and Split above Hvar and Dubrovnik. Korcula reminded Lorna and I of well-maintained towns like Nice and Corsica in France. The streets are kept really clean and the high-walled, maze-like alleyways are fantastic to walk through. As for the restaurants lining the walls overlooking the...

Hvar

From Split it was extremely easy to catch the ferry to the island of Hvar. We walked with all our gear for about ten minutes to the ferry terminal in Split, proclaimed that we wanted to go to Hvar, and paid $6 AU for a ticket. Thirty minutes later and we were on our way to Hvar, the fourth most populated island off the Croatian coast. Lorna and I were expecting quite a lot from the island of Hvar. I’m not saying it was a bad place, but . . . it’s pretty small. You can pretty much do the town and castle and have something to eat and then be on your way in about four...

Split

Split was a pleasant surprise, especially after spending two months in Italy. We caught the bus from Plitvice to Split at 1:30 p.m. It was quite a long bus ride. We arrived at 8:00 p.m. at the Split bus station, just outside the city walls. We would have arrived earlier, but the bus driver insisted on taking four, twenty-minute breaks along the way. Better than dying, I suppose. As we hopped off the bus we were confronted by at least ten people begging us to choose their apartment. We hadn’t had a chance to book one in advance, due to a lack of internet connection in our...

Plitvice

The Plitvice lakes are a beautiful almost-untouched section of natural Croatian forest almost spanning 20 hectares. There are 16 crystal clear lakes and quite possibly a hundred natural waterfalls (some as high as 20 meters). It’s a definite must-see destination if you’re visiting Croatia, even though it’s a little out of the way. Lorna and I began our mission to the lakes from Rome, where we hopped on a plane to Trieste and stayed for one night with a lovely lady called Patrizia in her bed and breakfast style apartment called Venezian Luna Rossa B&B. The...
